When Hurricane Irene hands you lemons, make lemonade. That's the perspective of Virtual Celebration, which has partnered with the ASPCA and imaginatively created a Virtual Adoption Month website as a stand-in for the ASPCA Adoption Day at the Hampton Classic. Virtual Celebration creates online environments that help companies promote their brands and organizations advance their missions by capturing the connecting, playing, sharing, giving and gifting of celebrations online.
Last year, representatives of nine Long Island animal shelters organized Adoption Day at the Hampton Classic. They assembled cats, dogs, horses and other pets eligible for adoption to meet the public. Adoption Day 2011, scheduled for Monday, August 29, had to be cancelled due to Hurricane Irene's disruption of planned activities.

All of the shelters invited to participate in the live event have provided photos and descriptions of the animals available for adoption. They are also promoting the Virtual Adoption Month website to their supporters.
In the ten-day period ending Sunday, September 11, more than 1,200 people have visited the website. These visits have generated about 15,000 views of the adoptable animals, and, as a result of Virtual Celebration's pet adoption website, many inquiries have been made by individuals and families seeking to adopt dogs and cats, among other pets. At least nine dogs have been adopted since starting the event, including Shagg, Charles and Winnie; the adopted pets can be seen here.
Virtual Adoption Month is scheduled to run until early October.
