Disable systemd use of escape codes in status messages

Disable systemd use of escape codes in status messages

I have an OpenSuSE 12.3 installation which I connect to through the serial console, and it is set up to also show boot messages there.
However, the boot process misconfigures the terminal so that it further shows some characters (@, {, }, ~ amongst others) garbled, i.e. use another font point. I believe this is due to the escape code used to display status as systemd loads services.
How can I disable systemd from using escape codes in the printout to console (before any user is logged on)?
